Residents in Spain’s Valencia region are bracing for additional rain, just days after devastating floods swept through the area, leaving behind a trail of destruction and raising the death toll to at least 158. The state weather agency, AEMET, issued an amber alert for four regions, including Valencia, warning that adverse weather conditions are expected to persist. “We’re going to send a clear message,” AEMET stated on social media, emphasizing that the meteorological emergency is far from over.
The recent flooding represents one of the deadliest episodes in Spain’s modern history, with flash floods devastating parts of the country, washing away bridges, vehicles, and streetlights. Many individuals remain unaccounted for, as rescue operations continue in the wake of the disaster. Most of the fatalities have been reported in the Valencia region, prompting the deployment of over 1,000 soldiers from Spain’s emergency response unit to assist local emergency services in rescue efforts.
