The United States has unveiled a new cooperation framework with South Korea, reinforcing its commitment to regional security in the contested Indo-Pacific area. This announcement came after a pivotal meeting at the Pentagon between U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin and South Korean Defense Minister Kim Yong Hyun, during which they discussed strengthening the U.S.-ROK alliance to ensure a free, peaceful, and prosperous Indo-Pacific region.
The initiative, officially titled the Regional Cooperation Framework for U.S.-ROK Alliance Contributions to Security in the Indo-Pacific, aims to demonstrate the alliance’s dedication to maintaining stability in the face of rising tensions, particularly concerning China’s influence. While the framework does not explicitly name China, South Korean media reports suggest that it is designed to counter Beijing’s expanding presence in Southeast Asia and the South Pacific.
