South Korea announced new sanctions against North Korean officials and organizations following Pyongyang’s latest intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) launch, which has stoked fresh regional security concerns. The sanctions, directed at 11 individuals and four entities, are intended to penalize North Korea for what is seen as an escalatory move amid allegations that Pyongyang is supporting Russia’s military efforts in Ukraine by supplying soldiers.
North Korean leader Kim Jong-un oversaw the recent missile launch, reportedly of the Hwasong-19, which was confirmed as the highest-reaching projectile launched under his regime. South Korean officials noted that the missile remained airborne for nearly 90 minutes, marking the country’s longest test. The missile’s trajectory was sharply angled, taking off near Pyongyang and eventually landing approximately 200 kilometers west of Japan’s Okushiri Island. Japan reported that the missile traveled around 1,000 kilometers, reinforcing concerns about North Korea’s evolving missile technology and its reach.
