In a significant development within Russia’s military hierarchy, Major General Alexander Ogloblin has been arrested on suspicion of corruption. Ogloblin, formerly the head of Russia’s military communications department, is accused of accepting bribes amounting to 10 million rubles (approximately $103,000) from a telecommunications company in exchange for securing defense ministry contracts. His detention, confirmed by Russia’s Investigative Committee, highlights an ongoing crackdown on corruption within the Russian armed forces, particularly among high-ranking officials.
This arrest follows Ogloblin’s prior conviction for embezzlement, for which he was sentenced to four and a half years in prison in February 2022. He was released early after providing testimony against his former superior, Vadim Shamarin, the deputy chief of Russia’s General Staff. However, Shamarin later testified against Ogloblin, revealing that they had both received procurement kickbacks from the manufacturer Perm Telephone Plant Telta. Observers speculate that Shamarin’s actions may have been motivated by revenge.
