SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — Samsung is integrating artificial intelligence into its upcoming Galaxy S25 lineup, marking the next step in the company’s strategy to create smartphones that function as AI companions. The new models, unveiled in San Jose, California, represent the second generation of Galaxy smartphones designed to operate in the AI-driven world. While the core hardware remains similar to last year’s model, with upgrades including a faster chip and a more powerful ultrawide camera lens, the primary focus is on AI advancements.
Samsung’s push for the Galaxy S25 series emphasizes the integration of AI as a virtual assistant that will not only respond to commands but also anticipate user needs. This includes the ability to learn users’ routines, manage information across various apps, and perform unique tasks such as removing unwanted sounds from videos or identifying songs playing in the background. The AI will also create tailored digital profiles for users, referred to as “personal data engines,” which will adapt based on individuals’ behaviors and preferences.
The company’s vision for the Galaxy S25 is to turn it into an indispensable “AI companion” by offering deeper insights into user activities while providing enhanced privacy protections. Samsung guarantees that all AI-generated data will remain securely stored on the device itself, protected in a secure digital environment they refer to as their “Fort Knox” of data storage.
Samsung’s pricing for the Galaxy S25 lineup remains steady following last year’s price hike, with the standard model priced at $800, the Plus model at $1,000, and the Ultra model at $1,300. These devices will be available in stores starting February 7.
Forrester Research analyst Thomas Husson predicts the Galaxy S25 will provide users with a more intuitive and seamless experience. However, he also noted that AI may not yet be the driving factor for purchasing a new smartphone. Despite this, Samsung’s efforts have led to strong sales growth, with the company selling 32 million units of the Galaxy S24 models from January to September 2024, a 25% increase from the previous year, according to Canalys.
While Samsung continues to gain ground in the higher-end market, it faces competition from cheaper alternatives made by Chinese manufacturers. The Galaxy S25 lineup draws heavily on AI technologies developed by Google, including the “circle to search” function, which allows users to identify songs playing in a video. This feature will debut on the Galaxy S25 before becoming available on other Android devices later in the year.
As Samsung continues to push the boundaries of AI technology in smartphones, consumers can expect to see more innovation and integration in future models. For more on Samsung’s AI developments, explore their official Samsung Newsroom.
