Amazon Invests in Small Nuclear Reactors for Clean Energy

On Wednesday, Amazon announced its investment in small nuclear reactors, marking a significant step toward securing new sources of carbon-free electricity. This development comes just two days after a similar announcement from Google, as both tech giants strive to meet the growing energy demands from their data centers and artificial intelligence operations.

The move follows recent plans by the owner of the defunct Three Mile Island nuclear power plant, which intends to restart reactors to supply Microsoft with power for its data centers. While all three companies have been actively investing in solar and wind technologies to generate electricity without greenhouse gas emissions, they now recognize the need to explore additional clean energy options to satisfy their commitments to reducing emissions.

Nuclear Energy as a Climate Solution

Nuclear energy is increasingly seen as a viable solution to the climate crisis. The main advantage is that nuclear reactors do not emit the greenhouse gases typically associated with fossil fuel power plants. As global electricity demand rises, particularly with the electrification of buildings and vehicles, the pressure on electric grids has intensified.
