SEATTLE — The Seattle Seahawks’ chances of making the postseason took a significant hit following a 27-24 loss to the Minnesota Vikings. The game was decided by a late touchdown pass from Sam Darnold to Justin Jefferson, with the Vikings solidifying their victory through a game-ending interception of Seahawks quarterback Geno Smith.
Before the game, the Seahawks controlled their own destiny. A win would have kept them in contention to secure the NFC West by winning their final two games. However, with this loss, their playoff probability dropped to 24%, according to league data. The division-leading Los Angeles Rams now have the opportunity to eliminate the Seahawks if they defeat the Arizona Cardinals in their upcoming game.
Seattle head coach Mike Macdonald expressed frustration over the team’s situation but emphasized the importance of staying focused. “Our destiny is not in our hands right now, which is tough,” Macdonald said. “But we still have a ton of football to play for. One or two breaks, and we’re back in it.”
The Seahawks’ midseason decline has been notable. Two weeks ago, they led the NFC West and had a greater than 50% chance of making the playoffs. Now, they trail the Rams, who extended their winning streak to four games with a recent victory over the New York Jets. While the Seahawks technically remain in contention for the division title, the scenarios required to achieve this are extraordinarily unlikely, involving losses and wins across multiple teams.
Adding to the challenge, Seattle has struggled at home this season, finishing with a 3-6 record at Lumen Field. This marks only the third losing home record since the stadium opened in 2002.
Looking ahead, the Seahawks will face the Chicago Bears on Thursday night.
