Zambian police arrest 2 over alleged plot to bewitch President Hichilema

Arrests Made in Alleged Witchcraft Plot Against Zambian President

LUSAKA, Zambia — Authorities have arrested two individuals suspected of plotting to harm President Hakainde Hichilema through witchcraft practices, according to statements made by police on Friday.

Details of the Arrest

The suspects, identified as Jasten Mabulesse Candunde, 42, and Leonard Phiri, 43, are believed to have been hired by Nelson Banda, the brother of fugitive lawmaker Jay Banda, to execute a plot against the Zambian leader. Jay Banda is currently on the run after escaping from police custody in August 2024, where he faced charges related to aggravated robbery. The exact location of Jay Banda remains unknown.

Police spokesperson Rae Hamoonga announced the arrests, indicating that both Candunde and Phiri were apprehended while allegedly practicing witchcraft. They face multiple charges that include practicing witchcraft, possession of charms, and cruelty to animals.

Hamoonga outlined the nature of the suspects’ activities, stating, “The suspects were found in possession of assorted charms, including a live chameleon, and are alleged to be practicing witchdoctors.” It was also revealed that they intended to use these charms to inflict harm on President Hichilema, referring to their mission as an outrageous attempt to threaten the safety of the Head of State.

Financial Motivation

The police spokesperson further noted that the suspects had agreed to a payment of $7,400 for their alleged services. This financial aspect raises questions regarding the motivations behind such a plot and the environment in which political tensions may give rise to criminal activities.

Context and Implications

This incident sheds light on the intersection of traditional beliefs, political tensions, and criminal activities in Zambia. While witchcraft accusations may be somewhat common in various parts of Africa, the context of this case highlights significant concerns about political stability and safety in a country still adjusting to recent governmental changes.

The current administration under President Hakainde Hichilema has been working diligently to promote peace and security within Zambia. Hichilema, who assumed office in August 2021, faces various challenges as he navigates the political landscape of the nation.

Moving Forward

As the investigation continues, authorities will likely seek to uncover any additional individuals or circumstances surrounding this dangerous plot. The Zambian police have emphasized their commitment to ensuring the safety of public officials and maintaining law and order in the country.
