Ukrainian Forces Regain Control Near Pokrovsk as Russia Intensifies Offensive

October 14, 2024

Ukrainian forces have successfully recaptured strategic positions previously held by Russia near Pokrovsk, a critical logistics hub in the Donetsk region. The Institute for the Study of War (ISW) reported on October 13, 2024, that Russian military operations in the area continue to intensify as Moscow seeks to solidify its control over the city and its vital road and rail connections. The ISW provided a detailed map illustrating the current state of the conflict, highlighting key areas of activity.

Russia has been launching offensives aimed at capturing Pokrovsk, with pro-Moscow military sources claiming progress in seizing nearby villages such as Mykhailivka and Tsukuryne, located to the southeast. However, Ukrainian military intelligence has countered these assertions, indicating that Ukrainian forces have regained lost ground southeast of Pokrovsk, particularly around the village of Selydove.

Moscow’s efforts east of Pokrovsk have reportedly escalated, with some reports indicating that Russian forces are beginning to deploy armored vehicles in their assaults. Notably, a Russian missile strike targeted the Korotchenka Mine on the eastern outskirts of Selydove, demonstrating the ongoing intensity of the conflict. The ISW’s latest updates highlight Russian advances in the region, including the capture of Zhelanne Pershe and Ostrivske, while also noting Ukrainian successes in repelling Russian advances near Toretsk and Donetsk City.

Despite the aggressive maneuvers by Russian forces, the ISW has observed that these attacks do not seem to be part of a broader offensive strategy. Over the weekend, reports indicated that elements of Russia’s 336th Naval Infantry Brigade and the 394th Motorized Rifle Regiment engaged in assaults near Levadne, breaching Ukrainian defenses in the process.

On a different front, Ukraine’s military intelligence directorate (GUR) reported an incident where a Russian Tu-134 military transport aircraft was set ablaze at a military airfield in Orenburg Oblast, approximately 780 miles from the front lines. The GUR shared footage of the fire, indicating that Ukraine has conducted strikes against Russian airbases in recent days, further highlighting the ongoing military tension between the two nations.
