MI5 Alerts Public to Russian Plots Aiming to Create Chaos on UK Streets

October 9, 2024

London, October 9, 2024 – The head of MI5 has issued a stark warning about Russia’s ongoing efforts to create chaos on the streets of the UK. According to MI5 Director-General Ken McCallum, Russian intelligence agencies, particularly the GRU, have been involved in a series of reckless actions aimed at destabilizing British society.

In his annual security update, McCallum highlighted that these actions include arson, sabotage, and other dangerous activities. The UK’s support for Ukraine in its conflict with Russia has made it a significant target for these disruptive operations. McCallum emphasized that the UK must remain vigilant as further acts of aggression on British soil are expected.

The MI5 chief also noted that the agency has responded to numerous plots backed by Iran, adding to the complex mix of threats the UK faces. Since 2022, MI5 has thwarted 20 Iran-backed plots, which presented potentially lethal threats to British citizens and residents.

The situation underscores the increasing challenges faced by MI5, which continues to deal with a wide range of terror-related threats, including Islamist extremism and extreme right-wing terrorism. McCallum’s briefing revealed that young people are increasingly being drawn into online extremism, with a significant number of those investigated for terrorism involvement being under 18.

The UK’s current terror threat level remains substantial, meaning an attack is likely. McCallum’s warning serves as a reminder of the ongoing and evolving threats posed by both state and non-state actors.
