77-Year-Old Slice of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip’s Wedding Cake Sells for £2,200 ($2,800)
A rare slice of cake from the historic 1947 wedding of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip has sold at auction for an impressive £2,200 ($2,800). This nearly 77-year-old piece of cake, although no longer edible, remains preserved in its original box, complete with a silver insignia bearing the initials of Princess Elizabeth and a delicate doily inside, making it a unique piece of royal history.

A Gift from the Royal Couple
This slice of cake was a gift from the newlyweds to Marion Polson, the housekeeper at Holyrood House in Edinburgh, Scotland. Along with the cake, the royal couple sent a heartfelt letter to Polson, with Princess Elizabeth expressing her gratitude for a wedding present. The letter reads:
“We are both enchanted with the dessert service; the different flowers and the beautiful colouring will, I know, be greatly admired by all who see it. This is a present which we shall use constantly, and whenever we shall think of the kindness and good wishes for our happiness which it represents.”
The Wedding Cake: A Symbol of Royal Splendor
The grand wedding cake, which symbolized the royal occasion, was an extravagant, nine-foot tall creation weighing 500 pounds. It was decorated with the royal families’ coats of arms, sugar-iced figures representing the couple’s favorite activities, and yielded 2,000 slices for guests. Additional slices were sent to charities and organizations, and one tier was famously preserved for the christening of Prince Charles.

A Thriving Market for Royal Wedding Cake Slices
Slices from the royal wedding cake have occasionally appeared at auctions, with one such slice selling for £1,750 ($2,300) at Christie’s in 2013. Other pieces of royal wedding cakes have also commanded significant prices. For instance, a 40-year-old slice from the wedding of Prince Charles and Princess Diana was sold for £1,850 ($2,565) in 2021.

The Enduring Appeal of Royal Wedding Memorabilia
The continued fascination with royal wedding memorabilia, particularly cake slices, speaks to their cultural significance. Despite the passage of time, these pieces remain highly valued by collectors and history enthusiasts alike, offering a tangible connection to one of the most famous royal weddings in modern history.
